What Emerging Technologies Should You Look Out for in the Digital Sector?

Technology has always been rapidly evolving, and with the changes from 2020, technology has now adapted to also meet demand and changing circumstances.

From Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Virtual Reality (VR), to image recognition and QR code technology – what should you be looking out for in the digital sector?

Let’s take a look.

Artificial Intelligence

AI has been a hot topic in recent years.

Across industries, AI is being utilised for a multitude of applications, solutions and insights.

Currently the largest force in emerging technology, AI is simply programmed algorithms that can mimic a lot of the capabilities of the human mind, such as learning from experience, problem solving and making decisions.

Part of the reason behind the rise in the use of AI is the abundance of data we now have, which AI can process faster, and in most cases, more accurately than humans.

From completing the words that we type and vacuuming our floors, to analysing important medical data and imaging – AI is only going to get bigger and better.

Virtual Reality

Not new to us, but far more familiar, VR is the computer-generated simulation of an environment or 3D image that can be interacted with through equipment.

Not only is VR taking hold in gaming, it’s also an extremely valuable technology for operational efficiency and productivity.

In 2020, VR was utilised a lot in the property industry to give virtual viewings of properties like never before, and is applied across retail, healthcare, education and tourism.

As the accessibility of VR increases, it’s undoubtable that the demand, and applications of it, will increase too.

Robots/Robotic processes

Though we may associate the use of robots and robotic processes mostly with manufacturing and assembly lines, the use of robots is becoming more widespread.

Software robotics are on the rise in the workforce, particularly in customer service, contact centres and process automation.

More interestingly, humanoid robots have been trialled across a variety of applications – though this is unlikely to be as widespread as virtual robots and software robots.

Cloud computing

Whether we realise it or not, cloud computing is in many areas of our lives already.

Most of the data we use, particularly in voice communications, are stored in the cloud by the biggest tech companies.

One potential change for cloud computing is serverless computing, whereby providers provide backend services on an as-used basis – you’d be charged based on usage, not on a fixed amount of bandwidth or number of servers.

Cloud computing has also been a life-saver for remote working, making sure that collaboration is just a few clicks away and that data is safely secured in one place.
