Businesses are being prompted to apply for the government’s gigabit broadband scheme, which offers firms the chance to apply for a £2500 voucher for gigabit broadband speeds, sooner rather than later, as it could close a year earlier than expected, in March 2020.
It was initially announced that the scheme (worth £67 million) would run until March 2021. But due to heightened demand, these funds could be allocated a year earlier, or even before if current uptake continues.
The government has even reduced the value of the scheme from £3000 to £2500 to ensure that a greater number of businesses have the ability to benefit. This change is also to encourage nearby businesses to “pool” their vouchers together in order to extend the reach of the broadband without the need for extra funding.
Here’s what the Federation of Small Businesses Chairman, Mike Cherry, had to say about the new deadline:
“Access to good broadband is vital for small businesses across the UK, and with the clock ticking on this scheme, it’s important small businesses don’t delay if they want to apply for funding.”
This project is part of a wider series of initiatives by the government to ensure Britain has full fibre broadband coverage by 2023 – ensuring no business or home is left behind.
