Prism’s Rollout of Business Grade, Fibre Optic Broadband Begins

As the Government “superfast broadband for everyone” scheme stumbles, Prism powers forward with the launch of our Fibre to the Cabinet service.

Fibre to the Cabinet or “FTTC” for short, is our new Fibre Optic broadband service; providing speeds of up to 80 Megabytes per second. August has seen several of our existing clients take advantage of these superfast speeds as we look to bring superfast speeds to businesses across the UK.

You’ve probably seen Fibre Optic Broadband on the TV or advertised online; but what actually is it and what does it mean to your business? FTTC offers a higher performance internet connection using fibre optic cable which is delivered to your local telephone exchange (the “cabinet”), rather than the copper phone lines which we’re used to.

The most important benefit to you is the superfast speeds that this grants, meaning better quality video streaming, faster downloads and uploads of files and swift responses from online applications.

In recent related news, the National Audit Office last month announced that the Government programme, which plans to bring superfast broadband to 90% of Britain by 2017, is running late.

Of the original 44 planned local projects, only 9 of these are expected to hit the aforementioned target date if the report is to be believed. It is speculated that BT is currently the only party showing interested in winning the possible 44 projects, leading to limited availability for the rollout.

Head of the Nation Audit Office, Amyas Morse said: “The rural broadband project is moving forward late and without the benefit of strong competition to protect public value.

“For this we will have to rely on the department’s active use of the controls it has negotiated and strong supervision by Ofcom.”
